Bruxism (Grinding teeth) and night guards

Grinding your teeth can result in significant damage of your teeth. In addition, it may contribute to pain in your jaw and/or muscles. At first, the impact may seem minimal. Once the outer layer of tooth (enamel) has been worn away, the second layer (dentin) will wear at a much faster rate. Wear spots may occur on teeth creating a very undesirable cosmetic appearance.  Often patients will grind their teeth at night and are usually unaware of this habit.  However, other patients may catch themselves grinding their teeth while at work or in other stressful situations.  Whatever the case may be, a night guard or occlusal guard can be made to help prevent this problem from occurring or progressing further.
