dental implantA dental implant is a metal (titanium) structure that is placed in the jawbone.  Over time, the jaw bone will heal around the implant and stabilize it within the bone.  Implants have several different uses.  Some of these uses include, replacing a single missing tooth, replacing multiple teeth, holding a denture in place, and providing support for a denture.  Implants that are used to replace a tooth will eventually have a crown or cap placed on them to mimic the appearance of a natural tooth.
